A Minute with Rachael

11 April 2017

Meet Rachael Mackay - one of our new graduates.

We spent a minute with one of our newest recruits, Rachael Mackay to get a feel for how she is settling in and what led her to want to forge a career as a Registered Music Therapist (RMT).
Rachael is a country girl from Oberon and spent most of her childhood in and around the Blue Mountains.
Rachael completed her Masters of Creative Music Therapy in 2016 and joined the Nordoff-Robbins team this year.
Why did you choose to study music therapy?
I chose to study music therapy because 1) I love music and 2) I’ve been fortunate to grow up seeing the benefits it has on my sister who acquired a brain injury at age three. So it has been quite a personally driven career choice as I look to help others with a variety of needs.
What is your favourite part about being an RMT?
The best thing about being an RMT is watching music make a difference. Being relatively new to the profession it has been humbling and inspiring to be around and learn from the strong, vulnerable, and resilient people I get to work with.
Most challenging part of the job so far?
Well, it’s only been a couple of months and there are a lot of songs that go into our sessions as everyone has different tastes and needs. So the pressure to learn enough songs is always there. There are so many aspects to music therapy and sometimes you feel like a jack-of-all-trades, it’s quite the balancing act.
How many instruments do you play?
My main instruments are the clarinet and saxophone. But I also play piano, guitar and sing.
Is there a particular instrument you want to learn and why?
Steel Drums. Because they just sound so happy.
Who is your favourite musician/band and why?

A singer songwriter named Lior, he has a real gift for storytelling.
