Rare Disease Day

photo-col.jpg
February 28th marks the 11th annual World Rare Disease day. In celebration of rare disease day we would like to share a very unique story of one of our clients named Austin.

15 year old Austin was the 26th baby born in the world with a rare chromosomal disorder called Q10 26.3 translocation to 8P. Austin is affected physically and cognitively by this disorder, and has been attending music therapy for about a year, to work on his motor skills and aid social interaction.

Austin loves coming to music and starts by planning his session on the board with his therapist Chanelle. Together they decide on 5 activities for the session, and tick off every activity when they have completed it. Austin enjoys copying rhythm patterns on the djembe drums, and is getting pretty good! Austin also loves playing the drum kit and guitar, but his favourite activity is when Chanelle brings her saxophone and they improvise together. Austin demonstrates initiation and non-verbal social interaction as he listens to Chanelle and replies musically with a horn and some dancing. He is building on his sequencing skills, engaging in turn-taking, and demonstrating joint attention as he makes music with his therapist.
