A Minute With Laura

15 December 2017

We chatted to Laura about her first year as an RMT.

Laura grew up in the Blue Mountains. She says she was always surrounded by music and began to learn violin at 5 years of age. Laura finished her Masters of Creative Music Therapy at Western Sydney University in 2016 and started working with the team at Nordoff-Robbins at the start of 2017.
Why did you choose to study music therapy?

I always knew that I wanted to pursue a career in music but avenues like performing and teaching were not things I was passionate about. When I came across Music Therapy I knew it was for me straight away as it was something that allowed me to use my love of music to assist others in reaching their goals.
This is your first year practicing, what is your favourite part about being an RMT?

I love sharing music with such a wide range of people, currently the youngest client I work with is 3 years old and the oldest is 102! It has been amazing to see the positive impact that music can have on everyone and how it enables people to achieve things they haven’t before.
Most challenging part of the job so far?

I feel privileged to be able share music with older clients in their final stages of life but it is quite difficult to see them pass away. This makes me value every interaction I have with these clients.
Sweetest or most memorable client moment of 2018?

Earlier this year I assisted one of my aged care Music Therapy groups in putting on a concert. Seeing their confidence and relationships with one another grow through this along with their positive reactions after the concert was lovely.
How many instruments do you play?

My main instruments are violin and piano but I can also play guitar and sing.
Is there a particular instrument you want to learn and why?

I would love to learn to play the cello, it has such a rich and beautiful sound.
What advice would you give someone thinking about studying their Masters to become a Registered Music Therapist?

Get comfortable with improvising!
Who is your favourite musician/band and why?

I listen to so many kinds of music it’s so hard to choose! At the moment I’m enjoying folk bands like Mumford and Sons and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.
And finally, what is the most requested song by your clients?

As I work with many older clients, ‘You are my Sunshine’ is up there with most requested.
