Angelina and Music Therapy
Angelina presents as a happy five year old who has been diagnosed with a global developmental delay and difficulties with her speech. Angelina has been attending music therapy to address issues with communication, fine and gross motor movement and confidence in general.
Current goals being addressed are to increase her initiative in responding verbally to the music therapist, as well as extending her vocabulary and sentence use, ultimately improving her communication skills and building her social confidence. Many songs and musical activities are introduced to encourage Angelina’s participation. These are structured around various techniques such as leaving out some lyrics – encouraging Angelina to “fill in the gaps” as well as providing opportunities for her to invent new lyrics, fuelling her cognitive processes.
Gross motor movement is being addressed and extended by offering songs or musical activities requiring specific actions, novel arm movements or dance moves. By playing percussion, guitar or the piano with only one finger Angelina is also working on improving her fine motor skills.
