Client Story - Kate
A STORY FROM KATE'S MUM
Kate started attending music therapy once a week when she was in Year 9. She has always been very musical but I was struggling to find an opportunity in her school’s curriculum where she could apply her musical ability and also be challenged. A singing tutor recommended Nordoff Robins and I started driving her to Kingswood from Springwood each Wednesday after school.
That was nearly 11 years ago and Kate still attends weekly. She has worked with brilliant therapists, initially Anna and then Rob who harnessed her love of music and nurtured her towards participating in a group, song writing and performing in front of others. Now she works with Rachael who is continuing the song writing and performing and also challenging Kate to try new instruments such as the keyboard.
Everyday life brings many challenges for Kate. She struggles with change, sensory issues and finds social interactions very difficult to navigate. Music therapy has provided her with a safe, accepting environment that celebrates her abilities and builds on them, giving Kate more self-awareness and confidence in herself. I have sat behind the glass during many sessions over the years, quietly beaming, sometimes crying, always rejoicing in my daughter’s lovely connection with her therapist and seeing her take risks that I never knew were possible. In what sometimes feels like a turbulent life for myself as Kate’s mum our involvement with Nordoff Robins has always felt like a safe haven for both of us. Weekly music therapy sessions are a very significant part of Kate’s life and I am forever grateful to that singing tutor who guided us in the right direction 11 years ago.
