Guitars for VETS

Guitars for VETS and Joe (RMT)

Guitars for Vets is an exciting new program that Nordoff-Robbins is running from our Penrith clinic. The program brings together veterans from the military or police force with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and music therapists. Together they learn some skills on the guitar and get to experience the broader benefits that playing music brings.

The program is the first of its kind in Australia, after a program by the same name in the U.S. found that guitar lessons reduced the symptoms of PTSD and improved health-related quality of life.

Beginning with individual lessons, after several weeks’ the program progresses into lessons in pairs, then finally larger groups. Everyone in the program gets their own guitar to take home to practice, as well as a tuner and a songbook.

Among the veterans there is a mixture of absolute beginners and more experienced musicians, however everyone has had great an experience so far. One of the participants told us, “We walk back to the car after this and we’re both just buzzing”.

To register for our guitar program or for more information please contact us via email and include your name and contact details for us to get in touch. You can also give us a call at our Kingswood Centre on 02 4736 0240.
