Julian and Music Therapy
Julian is 15 years old and has a diagnosis of Autism. He has been attending music therapy at Nordoff Robbins since 2015 with multiple therapists. Julian was referred to utilise his natural enjoyment of music to enhance his social and communication skills.
Julian has an incredible natural musical talent, and can play almost any song by ear on a range of instruments, including piano, bass guitar and drum kit without being taught how to play the instrument. However, Julian has difficulty expressing himself verbally and finds it hard to engage in social interactions. When he first started music therapy, Julian did not show any awareness of the therapist. He would often play music by himself and not respond to the music the therapist was making. As his program has progressed Julian started to show significant improvements in coactivity with the therapist and a greater self-confidence when interacting verbally and musically.
In more recent weeks we have seen Julian using humour. Including changing song lyrics and humour on the topic of "shawn Mendes" one of Julian's favourite artists. This is significant because humour involves a high-level understanding of shared experience and socialisation.
As Julian’s social skills are developed through music, it is hoped that he can use these skills to improve his social interactions and relationships with others in his everyday life. Follow the link to see the progress Julian is making.
