MECpro is a program designed to provide music for preschools and support early childhood teachers to engage in musical activities in their daily preschool routine. Our Music Therapist, Chanelle has been visiting these preschools weekly and they have had so much fun learning new songs, finding out about new instruments, and working on new ways to present old favourite nursery rhymes.
The children have enjoyed their weekly music sessions and especially learning fun new songs. Taba Naba, a Torres Strait Islander action song, has been a firm favourite and the children continue to play and sing this song during the week. They have learned important social and auditory discrimination skills by playing instruments to songs like Fine Musician and This Old Man. The children loved exploring new ways to make sounds from various instruments and even had a go at making some of their own!
The educators participate with enthusiasm in the music sessions and have enjoyed learning new repertoire. They report that since the program started, they have been using music in new ways – some rooms now have a regular morning music time every day. Some use dancing and singing as their go-to spontaneous activity when it’s too rainy or cold to play outside! The educators have developed confidence in using their singing voices and have even started learning ukulele! The children and educators alike feel capable of enjoying music regularly together even when Chanelle isn’t there.
MECpro has been a great experience for all involved, and although it’s sad to say goodbye, we are excited to hear all about how the preschools continue to use music together in their lives at preschool!
