Great initiatives thanks to AFFORD generosity

Thanks to the generosity of The Honda Foundation and AFFORD, we have a number of initiatives currently underway.

AFFORD Community Music Groups.
We currently provide Community Music Groups at selected AFFORD day program locations in Western Sydney with plans to continue to expand to additional sites in the second half of the year. The half days sessions are fun and interactive, equally enjoyed by staff and clients.

Group sessions run every week and are quite free in structure with our clients having a lot of input. The groups are quite dynamic ranging from physical limitations to minimal social and communication skills. By providing opportunities for group interactions we have seen increased socialisation and willingness to participate leading to greater emotional satisfaction and closer relationships with staff and therapists alike.

Rachael & Glenn
Glenn is 28 and has cerebral palsy. He is quite social and verbal and sings along in the group sessions, however Glenn presents with cognitive delay (sometimes up to 30 to 60 seconds when asked to play the drum or respond to musical cues) and some motor coordination difficulties. After a few weeks in group and individual sessions, Glenn is responding quicker, in particular with his drumming and singing and has shown an overall increase in confidence and interaction with other clients and staff.

Rachael & Nick
During his first music therapy session, Nick, whilst appearing content in the session, did not speak to Rachael and refused to engage with any instruments. During the second session, Rachael noticed Nick seemed to be fascinated with the guitar and she asked him if he would like to play. He picked up the guitar, strummed away for some time and in an extended improvisation Nick came alive, playing very passionately and then began singing…in Spanish! After the session he opened up about his Spanish heritage, his love of Spanish music and how his dad used to play guitar. From that day Nick plays guitar in the group sessions and everyone is impressed with his singing. Through music, Nick has gained a strong role and increased confidence within the group and now very much looks forward to music therapy with Rachael.

Primary School Music Club
For children in years 3 to 6, the music club - sessions run between 5 and 6pm every Wednesday at our Penrith clinic and at just $10 per session, it’s a great way for kids to build on their social and musical skills in a fun and safe environment.

Pre-school Music Club
This club is for children aged 3 – 5 and their parents and are held every Tuesday morning between 9:15 – 10am at our Kingswood clinic, these fun and interactive sessions use live music to support school readiness and social skills. Also only $10 per session

We have limited spaces available - to register for these fun programs or for more information please contact us via email info@noro.org.au  and include your name and contact details for us to get in touch. You can also give us a call on 02 4736 0240.

School of Rock!
In conjunction with Chocktoberfest at ImagineNations Church we will be ringing the bell on School of Rock for high functioning children with disabilities this October school holidays.

Over the course of two days and three short workshops, Jack (not Black) and Rob will be working with a small group of kids to develop a band to perform a song on stage in front of a live audience (just like the movie). And just like School of Rock it’ll be part performance/part personal development looking to develop social skills, confidence, self-esteem and the thrill of  getting up on stage.  It promises to be an amazing experience for the kids involved.

We are proud to partner with AFFORD to deliver these programs to the community, enabling us to build capacity and deliver great outcomes.
