Supported Music Lessons Ryan is 6 years old. He has a formal diagnosis of ASD and has been attending Music Therapy and Supported Music Lessons since Feburary 2017. After only 29 lessons Ryan sat his Priliminary AMEB music exam and passed with A honours! Ryan adores both the sound and the musical therory behind the piano. He is always facinated at the idea of numbers on the piano keys, as well as understanding that music theory and the piano are built on patterns. Piano and music therapy have assisted Ryan with social skills, language comprehension, memorisation, organisation, self-confidence and has had a great impact on his overall focus and attention. Ryan's family are extremely proud of Ryan "this is the first certificate that Ryan has ever receieved". Ryan's talent has brought much joy, in particular to Ryan's mum who see's his skills leading to job opportunities and an avenue for self-expression. Ryans mum explains that Ryan has always performed different from children his age and stuggled through out his life in many aspects. This time she said "Ryan is better, he has a skill that not everyone his age has, he's even better than me". The ability to play the piano has become a bonding opportunity for Ryan and his family. Ryan's mum now sings with Ryan at home and he helps play accopaniment for their church choir rehersals. ASD and piano may not seem to be a fit, however, so many children with special needs tend to have amazing musical abilities. The same holds true for children with ADD, ASHD, Aspeger's and Deslexia. There is in fact a solid connection between these gifts and piano. Gifted special needs children will find the piano is the best outlet for their expression. INTERESTED IN SUPPORTED MUSIC LESSONS?
